The Power of Inquiry...How a Single Question Unleashed Years of Thwarted Energy
My oldest friend has been visiting me for a few days. We started a tradition a few years ago after her divorce was final to spend time together during the Thanksgiving Holiday season while her kids are with their dad. We have been making a pilgrimage to New York for a little retreat and consignment shopping but this year that was curtailed by Covid so she came here for a “stay-treat” at my place.
The beautiful thing about having someone in your life who both holds your history and is willing to accept you as you are today is that very swiftly we can support each other to discover the insights we need in order to untangle the threads that we’ve wrapped our lives in that keep us stuck, stagnant and suppressed.
Every time we are together she remarks on how much I have supported her to “turn her lights back on”. And inevitably every time we are together she - in a single question - manages to help me to pop open something that I didn’t even know needed to be popped open and that subsequently frees me to be even more kind, gentle, understanding and compassionate with myself.
She did it again last night. That piercing single question - based on several days of observation (did I mention she’s a scientist - like as in a real life chemist who works for a major major pharmaceutical company) popped open two big realizations that let me see two patterns of behavior of mine that were playing out in real time. One was a 25 year old pattern around feeling obligated to produce a plethora of gifts as the holiday season approaches and initiated with my first marriage which happened to be to a man who was one of 15 children. The pattern - and if you are a creative person you might resonate - is getting into “production mode” to the point almost of obsession. She used that word - obsessed.
At first I had a bit of a trigger to my creative activity being characterized as “obsessed”. Up rose some defensive thoughts like “well this is just how my art/creativity expresses through me” and “you wouldn’t understand how inspired artistry works because you are too logical/left brained/scientific”. I didn’t voice these thoughts but they were in me none the less.
Thankfully she and I have such a long rich deep relationship that I was able to take her question, allow my defense responses to dissipate and ultimately come to a place of genuine understanding about where the pattern actually originated.
Once I have understanding then I can be at immediate CHOICE about what I want to really do.
Once I have understanding I can provide instant compassion to my self and even give my younger self a little applause for the way that she was able to turn lemons in to lemonade for herself.
Once I have understanding my energy can be more consciously channeled in a more positive and productive direction based on who I am now and what my actual present circumstances are.
Once I have understanding I can see clearly how my pattern of behavior has thwarted and sabotaged me from actualizing what I say to myself and the world that I really want to create but continuously fall short of actually creating because the energy/power to fuel the creation is tied up in re-enacting the pattern.
Once I have understanding I can STOP THE WORLD and re-set my altar and my intentions to be more in alignment with my most shameless expression of my own divinity and my actions can be initiated to align with those intentions.
